To protect yourself, book through reputable platforms
and only pay with a credit card.
Any lister who asks for payment through a third-party app,
wire transfer, or cryptocurrency,
is almost certainly a scam.
By using a credit card through the listing site,
you can access a number of purchase protections
that aren't available with other payment methods.
Look closely at the photos of the property
and compare them between listings.
If you see the same photo popping up in multiple places
or elsewhere online, that's a giant red flag.
If you know the address or the neighborhood,
look it up online and compare the listing
to the house visible to see if they're similar
and if the neighborhood is one
you feel comfortable staying in.
Read the reviews, both high and low.
Be wary of listings that have a lot of glowing,
over-the-top reviews within a short time period.
This is often a sign that ratings are fake.
Communicate with the host
and ask about the property and local area.
A legitimate host will usually be willing
to answer in detail.
Be wary of any last-minute changes to your agreement.
If the host suddenly tells you the property isn't available
and offers you another, this can also be a sign of fraud.
Trust your instincts.
If something seems too good to be true,
rock-bottom prices, amazing extra amenities,
et cetera, then it probably is.
