Business Social Media Security

As a business owner, social media likely plays a role in your marketing strategy. But are you staying safe online?

While there are a growing number of ways cyber criminals are trying to damage businesses through social media, there are a few simple steps you can take that have major security payoffs.

Since many criminals target your employees rather than attacking your business directly, have a social media policy for your business about what is appropriate to post and when—whether on your official business page or their private accounts—and train your staff accordingly. For example, a selfie shared from the office could potentially expose confidential information.

Teach your employees that simple things like clicking on questionable ads or links in posts or sharing information on quizzes while using work devices may have serious consequences, leaving them—and your business—open to hacking attempts.

Designate a single employee as the social media manager for your business page, and have them in charge of all final posting activity. This will also limit the need to share passwords and sign ons.

To protect your page from direct attacks, follow general security practices like using strong passwords and two-factor authentication.

Finally, have a plan in place for how your business will respond in the event that a breach happens.

Taking steps to protect your business on social media will take some time and effort, but the benefits far outweigh the costs of hacked accounts and compromised data. Protecting yourself protects your customers—and that’s just plain good business!
